the three Ps in today’s Scripture readings

There are three Ps emphasized in today’s Scripture readings:  poor – prayer – priorities!

In our first reading, Amos 8:4-7, the prophet says

“Hear this, you who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor of the land.” Then we read about the ways that the poor are cheated.  The prophet ends up saying , “The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob: Never will I forget a thing they have done!” The poor are precious to the Lord, and the Lord will not forget the abuse that they suffer.

In our second reading, 1 Timothy 2:1-8, we read

“… I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone …. this is good and pleasing to God our Saviour … ”  Prayer is not only important but essential for those of us who seek to be in relationship with God.

In our third reading, Luke 16:10-13, we are told in no uncertain terms that we have to set our priorities in life:  “You cannot serve both God and mammon.”  For one person mammon might be greed; for another it might be power; for another it might be lust… we can all fill in the blanks for ourselves.  Each one of us has to set priorities in life and God must come first.
