In today’s Gospel, Matthew 8:23-27, we hear the anguished cry of His disciples: “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” They were in a boat on the sea and a violent storm quickly overwhelmed them and swamped the boat with waves. Jesus said to them: “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” And then Jesus rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.
Sound familiar? Aren’t there times when we feel completely overwhelmed by the storms of life; times when we feel that our boat is swamped by waves and that we will perish. How many times have we cried out to Jesus: Help me! I am perishing! And how many times has Jesus reached out and calmed the seas of our lives. As fragile and often conflicted human beings, we know to whom we can and must turn: Jesus! He and He alone can bring tranquility into our lives.
