In today’s Gospel, Matthew 17:14-20, Jesus’ disciples are confused because they tried to drive out a demon from a young boy but could not. When they say to Jesus, “Why could we not drive it out?” He says to them, “Because of your little faith. Amen, I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Many of us do not have a deep, penetrating faith. Our faith is shallow, and often dissipates in the face of challenges. Jesus encourages us to develop our faith; to stretch our faith so that it will become stronger. This is something that we cannot do on our own. We need His grace and power. With Him all things are possible. Like the martyrs of old and the martyrs of today, we can confess our faith in the face of terrible situations and even die for Him if called upon. Amen!
