Do not be afraid

We begin this Sunday in Advent. We will end this Sunday in Christmas. It is a day of transition. I go to church this morning to celebrate the last week of Advent. I go to church this evening to proclaim with the Christian community that Jesus is born in Bethlehem.

The Advent reading is that of the Angel Gabriel’s visit to the young Mary informing her that she has been chosen to be the mother of the long-awaited Messiah. (Luke 1:26-38) We can enter into that scene using our imaginations. Mary was certainly bewildered. Gabriel assures her: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.” Gabriel’s assurance to Mary is also meant for us. We are exhorted not to be afraid because Emmanuel is here – with us – no matter what goes on in our lives and in our world. God is with us, and – incredible as it seems – God enters into the messiness of our world in the person of His Son – Jesus. DO NOT BE AFRAID. I am with you – always.
